Canada Post service disruption All driver’s licences and ID cards that are currently in progress will be held securely at the manufacturer’s site until the strike is over. The Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services has announced that interim paper driver's licences issued between November 1, 2024, and January 14, 2025, will now be valid until February 15, 2025. This means that Albertans with these interim licences can keep driving while waiting for their final driver's licence to arrive. If you received an interim licence on or after November 1, 2024, the extension is automatic, and you don’t need to do anything. Previous Alberta driver’s licences or ID cards can be kept as government-issued photo identification until your new one arrives in the mail, but you must securely destroy your previous card and destroy the temporary paper driver’s licence when the new card arrives. If you do not have your previous card, carry other sources of identity documents. It is recommended if your driver’s licence or ID card is not expiring to wait until after the end of the Canada Post disruption to renew. A card must be updated with a new address or condition code as per legislation. Expiry dates are in affect – it is a legislated requirement to renew your driver’s licence or ID card.
